Wired Science associate editor Brandon Keim asks “the pressing question” in an article aptly titled—Is Humanity Pushing Earth Past a Tipping Point?—”given incomplete but troubling information, what should people do?”
Amidst a sea of statistical probabilities, one thing is for certain, there certainly will be no shortage of environmental projections for what our post-industrial revolution world should expect by 2100—increasing C02; increasing population; food and water shortages; and more record breaking weather throughout our lifetime.
The earth and economy face tremendous pressures from the global demands of a population of 7 billion—double the population since the 1960s—placing limitless demands on limited resources. The current Anthropocene Epoch is evidenced by the significant and global extent to which human activities are unquestionably impacting the Earth’s ecosystems.
Our mission should not be to second-guess if data accurately predicts certain change or if humankind is responsible. Our calling should be to embrace that change is coming and to act in a balanced and positive manner based on what we instinctually believe is right.
It is time for us to adapt because we want to and not because we have to. To refute the accuracy of compelling scientific evidence is simply a waste of yet another precious resource—our time.
